Parrot Snacks

Homemade cookies with nuts, carrot peelings, kale, and eggshell

As long as I was making nut-based cookies the other day, why not make snacks for Robert, our blue and gold macaw?

Parrot Cookies (Snacks) Makes 36-ish.

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 1/2 cup corn meal
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 4 eggs, shells reserved, washed and pulverized
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 cup macadamia nuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 2/3 cup chopped kale
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Grease or line a cookie sheet.
  3. Combine flour, meal, baking soda, and egg shells in a medium-large bowl.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and coconut oil.
  5. Make a well in the dry ingredients and slowly add wet ingredients.
  6. Fold in nuts and vegetables.
  7. Using a cookie scooper or large spoon, drop the cookies onto a lined or greased cookie sheet, pushing down to spread them and leaving an inch between them.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
  9. Let the mixture stand for ten minutes on the pan, then transfer it to the cooling rack. Repeat as needed.
  10. Cool completely.
  11. Freeze half for later and store the rest in the refrigerator.
Man, oh man, does Robert love these cookies. I break them in half and give them to him as a treat, and he squawks, screams, and shows off attacking his toys before coming over to the perch where I always feed him treats.
